Sound Healing through Gong Immersions / Baths

by Cynthia Hutchison, DNSc, RN, HTCP/I, Boulder Healing Touch, LLC

Over the last year, I have enjoyed sharing with my readers some of my self care practices which have helped me to maintain and improve my overall body-mind-spirit health.  I have addressed body prayer, sun gazing, Earthing, and fasting. Here, I want to share with you a more recent addition to my self care: sound healing through gong baths (gong immersions).

Ken Goff, Gong Immersions

GONG BATHS/ GONG IMMERSION

I was introduced to the healing vibration of gongs last spring. Since then I have enjoyed numerous gong baths (also known as gong immersions) as part of my self care, as well as deeper first hand knowledge about sound healing. Imagine walking into a warm, peaceful room where your eyes are drawn to see three very large shining, beautiful, golden bronze gongs grouped together like a family of spirit beings. You create a cozy place for yourself on the floor with pads, blankets, pillows and perhaps an eye cover as well. The musician, who has an intimate relationship with how gongs communicate their healing tones, shares a fascinating introduction to understanding sound healing, and in particular, through gongs, whose tones resonate with the human energy system, the Earth and Cosmos. He asks attendees to set an intention for their healing. Then everyone lies down (occasionally some sit and observe) and gets cozy with their blankets in preparation for an hour or 90 minutes of immersion into sound healing.

The deep sound of the first gong initiates and washes the room with a lingering, far reaching sound that gently bathes the energy bodies of all present. One senses that Beings from other dimensions are also present to help create a healing space for all…The musician practitioner attunes himself with the gongs and intuits how he will co-create a sound dance within this group’s energy through the sun-like bronze disks. As the gongs are intentionally touched with different patterns, volumes and methods, they seem to sing out the Music of the Spheres with their Cosmic, yet grounding tones, which can be felt physically in the body as well as heard….

Every gong bath is unique and speaks to each person in an individual way. In general, participants experience a deep relaxation response (with or without falling asleep), as well as feeling emotional, mental and spiritual responses. After an hour or so, depending on the planned time frame, the gong immersion comes to a gentle closing, and participants have the option to quietly exit or to have a conversation among those remaining with the musician/practitioner as part of the healing experience.

Words of Kenneth Goff, Gong Musician/Practitioner for the HT Retreat and 2014 Worldwide HTP Conference:  “Gongs are cosmic, healing, vibratory and deep in resonance.  Every moment I have experienced with the gongs has been an immersion of vibration, meditative and spiritual in nature.  There are some periods of crescendos or layers of sound that you will experience, along with low tones that may be experienced at a cellular level.  The gongs will offer you a cosmic, vibrational, healing connection between your energy, the energy below (Mother Earth) and the energy above (the Cosmic World).  You will experience low vibrations/ pulses and the Music of the Spheres / Sound of the Universe while you immerse yourself in the groups’ union of vibration. In general, one can expect to experience a deep relaxation response and a meditative experience. Many describe gong immersions as very cosmic, expansive, yet grounding and centering. The body has an opportunity to recalibrate at a cellular level. People also describe experiences at physical, emotional, mental and spiritual levels…”
